04.05.2023: KI im Gespräch: Feminist perspectives on AI

Artificial Intelligence is on the verge of changing the world we live in today. However, those developing AI are overwhelmingly (cis)male, while women are severely underrepresented in the field. Not only does the composition of AI development teams perpetuate patriarchal tendencies, but the technological outcomes also reproduce sexist stereotypes. Do we need more diverse development teams so that relevant issues to overcome these problems are implemented at the programming level? Or can this problem be solved technologically at all, or is it a purely social quest? We will discuss pressing feminist perspectives on these questions with our two experts:

Sol Martinez Demarco (they/them) is a research associate at the International Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) at the University of Tübingen since September 2017 and a PhD candidate at the Ruhr-University Bochum since May 2021. In their PhD, Sol explores how practices of care and infrastructuring shape the work of feminist IT communities to make the field more diverse and inclusive. Their research interests lie at the intersection of Feminist Technoscience, Science and Technology Studies, Information Technologies and Science and Technology Policy.

Auguste Schulz studied physics in Heidelberg and London and neuro-engineering in Munich. Since fall 2020, she has been working as a PhD student at the University of Tübingen in Jakob Macke's research group at our Cluster of Excellence "Machine Learning". She is doing her PhD at the interface between neuroscience and machine learning. May 10th she is receiving the Tübingen Award for Science Communication for her activities in communicating artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The basic idea of the "AI in Conversation" series is to bring an AI researcher into a moderated exchange with a researcher from the humanities or social sciences and to address as many questions as possible from up to 25 students from various disciplines in a relaxed atmosphere. There will be drinks and finger food and plenty of time for discussion afterwards.
